On average we check our phones 85 times every day, with this interaction becoming an unconscious habitual action.  We are finding it harder and harder to stay focused on the present environment and enjoy the current experience, instead our attention jumps from one thing to the next. As a result our social interactions are suffering and stress levels are rising.

More and more people are calling for a digital detox, defined as “a period of time during which a person refrains from using electronic devices such as smartphones or computers, regarded as an opportunity to reduce stress or focus on social interaction in the physical world.”  So it looks like it might be time to step away from your phone and spend some quality time talking to real people, you know, those people on the other side of the table.

Some establishments are going to remarkable lengths to assist with the digital detox, with one bar recently hitting the news for building a Faraday Cage around the bar to exclude signals from being received inside. The owner said  "I just wanted people to enjoy a night out in my bar, without being interrupted by their phones.” However there is an opportunity for restaurants and bars to offer something extra without having to go to such lengths. Charging lockers for phones, with integrated charging cables give a secure place for devices to be stored for an evening. The customers choose the codes for added security and confidence, and can relax, assured their phone is safe and charging. This allows them to fully focus on the task in hand – enjoying their night out.

Studies show that quality interactions away from digital technology increase enjoyment of the moment, and customers that are more engaged socially in the here and now are likely to stay out longer, and spend more.  It makes total sense when you think about it.

So next time you are out for an evening or lunch date, try a Digital Detox and see how it feels. The pain of missing your phone will surely be outweighed by a greater social experience.
